Richard R. Nystrom, Sr., 89, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Born in Springfield, MA on February 3, 1935, he was the son of the late Anselm and Beatrice (LaValley) Nystrom. Richard grew up in East Longmeadow and attended local schools, graduating from Technical High School. Richard proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He eventually received his degree in Fire Science Technology from STCC while he served as a firefighter and EMT for the City of Springfield. Richard retired from firefighting as a lieutenant in 1991 after 25 years of service. Richard loved the outdoors from the time he was a boy and spent his free time hunting, fishing and trapping with family and friends. He was a strong advocate of the 2nd Amendment and was a lifetime member of the NRA.
Richard will be dearly missed by his children Rebecca Iwasinski (Joseph), Richard R, Nystrom Jr; and Catherine Kneszewski (Steven). He also leaves his 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Sadly, he was predeceased by his wife Nancy Nystrom on September 27, 2022, and his 4 siblings, Victor Nystrom (Fanny), Norma Festa (Vincent), John Nystrom (Carol), Linda Whitney (Rit).
Visiting hours for Richard will be Tuesday, October 1, 2024 from 11:00-12:00 Noon at the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home, 64 Sewall St., Ludlow, MA. A funeral home service will be held at 12:00 Noon. Rites of committal will follow at 2:00 PM at the Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Main St, Agawam, MA . Donations in Richard’s memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School (stjo.org).
