Marguerite R. (Cote) Surprenant, 95, of Ludlow passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. Born in Springfield on September 5, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Adrian and Aldea (Desmarais) Cote. Marguerite was a devout communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Ludlow, a member and former president of the Ladies of St. Anne Sodality. She was very active in the parish’s CCD program, choir and served as a greeter for many years. Her greatest joys in life were her family and serving God. She was blessed to be a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic Dominican Laity and was very involved with vocations to the priesthood and religious life. She held a weekly prayer Cenacle in her home for 39 years.
Marguerite is survived by her children Priscilla Lampron (Roger) and Patrick McCarthy (Kathleen Harren); her daughter-in-law Dawn McCarthy and her sister Barbara White. She also leaves her 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by 1st husband Bill McCarthy in 1969, her husband George Surprenant in 2007, her son Daniel McCarthy in 1999 and her brother Adrian Cote.
Funeral services for Marguerite will be Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at 9:00AM at the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home, 64 Sewall St., Ludlow, MA, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St, Elizabeth’s Parish, Hubbard St, Ludlow, MA. Burial will be in Hillcrest Park Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Monday, July 20, 2026 from 4:00-7:00PM. There are some people whose love you can feel from miles away, and Grandma was one of them. Losing her this week has left an ache in our hearts, but it's also filled us with gratitude because we were so lucky to be loved by her. She had a way of making each of us feel like we mattered. Every single year, without fail, the phone would ring on my birthday and it would be her. And when Stella and Piper came along, she added their birthdays to her list too, never missing a single one. It seems like such a small thing, but it wasn't. It was her way of saying, year after year, "I'm thinking of you. You are loved." Not everyone does that. She did, always. Her faith was the quiet strength behind everything she was. She lived it in the way she treated people; with patience, warmth, and a generosity of spirit that touched everyone around her. I find peace in knowing that she is now in the heaven she trusted and with the god she loved her whole life. One of my most treasured memories is bringing the girls to visit her when they were just five and seven. She was absolutely overjoyed to spend time with her great-granddaughters and you could see it radiating from her. The girls adored her instantly. They still laugh about how magical they thought her stair chair was, riding it up and down like it was the best amusement park ride ever invented. But more than anything, they remember her kindness. Even at that young age, they could feel how special she was. Stella and Piper are so blessed to have known their great-grandmother, and I'm so blessed to have had her in my life for as long as I did. Her thoughtfulness, her warmth, and her faith shaped our family in ways we'll feel forever. We love her, we miss her already, and we will carry her with us always. We're holding her close in our hearts and prayers.
Marguerite is one of the most loving people I know. She reached out to me nany times during our Dominican life. She teaches by example and loving service. May Jesus bless her and her family in the days to follow
I will miss you terribly! I have been gone from Springfield for five decades, but every year I sent you cards addressed to "Mom" and your cards to me were signed "Mom". You have always had a place in my heart and always will! I can hear you signing and know you are now in Heaven's choir of angels. Until we meet again and we will, Love Lynn

Marguerite, She was a mother to both Henry and me. We always knew that know matter what we were going through we knew that she always had our backs in prayer. When we joined the Dominicans, she was the very first person who came to us and put us under her guidance in Our Lord and His Blessed Mother. She was and is a true example of the Love Jesus and Mary has for us. We will miss you so much! Our heartfelt condolences to all her family members and to all her spiritual children. Our good Lord blessed Marguerite with a long life, during which she was His very faithful servant. I’ll have to say that our Dominican Chapter meetings were never the same when she could no longer attend. We were blessed to have her in our midst. She definitely had a charitable spirit, showing concern for others and promising to pray for them. I think all who knew her would agree that she was probably greeted by the Lord saying these words to her: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” May her soul rest in eternal peace. Amen
