Obituary

Karen L. (Beturne) Mason, 50, of Bristol, CT, passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2021. Karen is survived by her beloved husband Bill Mason and son Derek Mason, both of Bristol. She was the daughter of David and Margaret (Benoit) Beturne of Hampden, MA. She was born in Springfield, MA on December 21, 1970.  Karen was a graduate of Cathedral High School, University of Bridgeport and achieved her Master’s in Education from Sacred Heart University. She had previously worked as a 1st grade teacher in Hamden, CT. She volunteered her time to many school organizations and committees. Earlier, she enjoyed attending Derek’s baseball games and always liked watching the Yankees, The Voice and the Olympics. Attending a live performance of “So You Think You Can Dance” was especially meaningful as Karen had taken dancing and gymnastic lessons for many years. She enjoyed listening to music and reading novels as well as playing competitive games with her family. She was a very kindhearted and selfless person who spent a lot of her time writing thoughtful messages in greeting cards to family and friends. She loved getting together with family and friends as well. She especially enjoyed the Christmas season and celebrating Christmas Eve at the Beturnes. Even the simple pleasures of life like a warm sunny day or a surprise delivery of sunflowers boosted her spirits. Along with her husband Bill and son Derek, her parents David and Margaret, she is survived by her brother David Beturne and his wife Julie of Ellington, CT and her mother in law Margaret Mason of Little Egg Harbor, NJ, and 2 sisters-in-law Doreen Mason and Peggy Gould. Karen always enjoyed spending time with her nephews Ben, Nathan, Christopher, Nicholas, and Cole and niece Sarah, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends. She also leaves behind her beloved cat Oreo. Karen meant so much to so many and will be dearly missed by all those she came in contact with.

Meg and David, my heart breaks for you and all the family especially Karen's husband Bill and son Derek. There are just no words to express my most sincere condolences. I have such fond memories of you sharing very special stories about your kids and grandkids - especially about the Holiday season - throughout the many years we served ASPAN together. May your strong faith provide you strength and guidance as you navigate the coming weeks and months without Karen. Sending Love, Hugs and Prayers and asking our Merciful Father to hold you tightly. Jesus, I Trust in You.

Sweet, kind, thoughtful, gracious, selfless, strong, brave... I could go on forever. Karen was absolutely one of the most beautiful souls that I have ever known (with the slightest hint of mischief). All she'd been thru and yet she pushed forward, stayed positive and had a smile for everyone. There's no better way to honor Karen than to continue the goodness she spread to all. Smile more, be grateful for the little things, volunteer in her honor and don't forget to send those cards. :) Bill, Derek & Family - She loved you all more than anything. We are all praying for you. May your memories bring more smiles than tears. Godspeed my friend, I will miss and think of you always. xo

I am so sorry to hear about Karen’s passing. I met Karen many years ago when Derek was a little boy at the elementary school where I was the librarian. She was the easiest person to get to know as she was so kind and willing to help in any way she could. I can still see her waiting outside the school everyday to pick up Derek. He is certainly her pride and joy. Knowing Derek and what a fine young man he has become is a true testament to his mom. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and especially Derek at this time.

We are saddened by the loss of Karen but comforted in knowing she’s no longer in pain. We met when Derek and Janie started pre-K and have been friends ever since. Not one holiday went by without receiving a card from her. She was the most thoughtful caring person I’ve ever known. You’ll be missed so much!!! Keeping her entire family and friends in our thoughts and prayers! RIP my dear friend. You truly are an angel.

Karen was very thoughtful like her mother. A few years ago she asked family and friends for their favorite memories of Meg, her mother, and then she put those memories into a scrapbook for her mother and gave it to her for Christmas. ❤
