Joseph E. Surprenant, 83 of Springfield passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024. Son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Rivers) Surprenant, he was born in Springfield on September 20, 1940. Joe was a graduate of the former Springfield Technical High School and served in the National Guard. He joined the Wilbraham Fire Dept in 1968 and served as Fire Chief, retiring in 1991. After his retirement from the fire department, he worked at the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home for over 20 years. Joe was a member of the Melha Shrine in Springfield and served as a member of the Board of Directors for Shriner’s Hospital for Children for many years. Joe loved to golf, especially with his fellow retired “chiefs” Tony Jarvis and the late Homer Dubois.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years Kathleen (Roughgarden) Surprenant and his daughters Christine Surprenant and her wife Chris and Denise Curley and her husband John, all of Springfield. He also leaves his brothers Richard, Glenn, Gary and Harvey Surprenant and his sisters Judy Guertin, Noreen Edgar and Wendy Martin as well as his grandchildren Tiffany, Liam and Erin and his great-granddaughter Alanna.
Visiting hours for Joe will be Friday, January 19, 2024 from 11:00 AM -1:00 PM. A funeral home service will follow at 1:00 PM. Burial will be private, at the convenience of the family.
