Gilbert J. Sherman

Gilbert J. Sherman, 78, of Wilbraham, passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2022.  Son of the late Judson and Estelle (Couture) Sherman, he was born in Chicopee on June 11, 1943.  Upon graduating from Chicopee High School, Gilbert joined the Barron’s Weekly division of Dow Jones, retiring as the Chief Statistician.  While working at Barron’s he earned both his B.S. and MBA from AIC.  Active in many community organizations, Gilbert served as President of both Council # 62 and Lodge 711 of the Polish National Alliance.  He was President and an active, hands-on volunteer at Camp Stanica and taught faith formation at St. Catherine of Siena Parish for many years.

Gilbert is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 57 years Teresa (Struziak) Sherman; his daughter Gayle Sherman and sons Rev. Scott Sherman (Bridget) and Greg Sherman (Linda); his brother Dennis Sherman (Sandra) and sisters Donna Neumann (Barry) and Rochelle Settembre (Gary).  He also leaves his 7 beloved grandchildren David and Natalie Ricardo, Sarah, Rebekah, Patrick, Matthew and Alexa Sherman and sister-in-law Debbie McKinnon.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Douglas Sherman.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a Liturgy of Christian Burial for Gilbert on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at 11:00 AM in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1023 Parker St., Springfield, MA.  Please meet directly at church.  Rites of Committal will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.  Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2022 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home, 64 Sewall St., Ludlow, MA.  Masks will be required.  Donations in Gilbert’s memory may be made to the Polish Center for Discovery and Learning, 33 South St., Chicopee, MA 01020.
