Patrick, Michael, and family. Please accept our Deepest Condolences. I’ve known Mr. O’Neil since I was four years old, growing up in the neighborhood. He used to take Christopher Naugler and me on long bike rides, starting on Fuller Street, looping down to Rood Street, onto Center Street, up Chapin Street, and back again. He guided us with military precision. This was a long ride and big deal for a five-year-old kid. To me, it felt like an adventure, a voyage. Over the years, we had our disagreements, like the time he was on duty and pulled me over for speeding on my bike and blowing through the red light at Center and Chapin Street. But when my wife and I eventually moved back to the neighborhood and settled in right next door, he proved to be a good neighbor, reliable, watchful, and steady. Over time, we became friends. He and my wife, Carrie, developed a unique rapport, she, the fiery Irish harpy, and he, the gruff old Mick. Our cat Felix would often wander over to his place and stubbornly refuse to come home. I think he preferred Ed’s company. In his final years before moving away, we saw a different side of him, softer, more introspective. Carrie would often send over supper, and he was never shy about showing his appreciation. We came to care for him deeply. We miss our neighbor and friend. Rest in peace, Ed. Fair winds and following seas.
