David A. Downie, 74, of Springfield, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2018. Son of the late Albert and Jeannie (Martin) Downie, he was born in Ludlow on June 26, 1943. A graduate of Springfield Trade High School, David served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Dahlgren. He retired from Sweet Life Foods.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Cheryl (Soverow) Downie of Springfield; his son Todd Downie and his wife Mary of Westfield; his daughter Michelle Downie and her significant other Wayne Gennette of Wilbraham, a brother Robert Downie and his wife Diane of North Brookfield; a sister Nancy Kenyon of Chicopee, his aunt Jerry Rice and his brother-in-law Dr. Gary Soverow and his wife Mali of McLean, VA, along with several nieces and nephews. He also leaves many cousins but was especially close to Carol Roper and Pam Herndon, as well as his close friends Joseph Stebbins and Richard Paglia.
David was a youth baseball and soccer coach for many years, where he taught his son the love of sports. He also had a great passion for gardening and spending time at the Cape with his wife. He was extremely proud of his Scottish heritage.

Services celebrating David’s life will be held Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 245 Porter Lake Drive Springfield, MA.
