Obituary

Anne M. LaFortune, 91, of Belchertown, formerly of Ludlow, passed away on February 21, 2022.  She was born October 7, 1930 to George E. and Mary V. (Gleason) Smith.  She grew up in Worcester, graduating from St. Stephen’s High School in 1948.  She married James LaFortune on October 1, 1955 in Worcester. Together, they raised their family in Ludlow, where Anne worked for many years at Carmon Cleaners.  She was a communicant of Christ the King Church, a member of its Ladies’ Guild, volunteered at the Boys’ & Girls’ Club and was a Gridiron Mom.  She enjoyed all kinds of crafts, especially knitting and quilting, having made dozens of beautiful Christmas stockings over the years.  She also enjoyed reading, walking and visiting with friends and family.  Her door was always open for others to drop by, even unannounced, for she always had time to talk and tell stories.

Anne was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, James A. LaFortune who died December 16, 2021, a brother George Smith Jr., two sisters Marjorie Burns and Maureen Beckwith, and a niece Donna Burns.

She leaves her six children David LaFortune (Sue) of Ocean Park, ME, Paula Dobbins (Mike) of Bossier City, LA; Judy Thornton (David) of Belchertown, MA; Tom LaFortune (Barbara) of Shreveport, LA; Amy LaFortune of Corpus Christi, TX and Daniel LaFortune (Lori) of Guthrie, OK; her sisters-in-law Nancy Gehring of West Springfield, MA and Marlene Denice (Tony) of Hagerstown, MD.   “Nana” also leaves her 12 grandchildren Jenna Evans (Jon), Katie Endicott (Joey), Jeremy Dobbins (Kendra), Rebecca Breedlove (Stephen), James Dobbins (Jennifer), Emily Dannen (Michael), Jacob LaFortune,  Kody Westbrook, Eli Westbrook, Noah Westbrook, Joshua LaFortune and Kaden LaFortune; and 6 great-grandchildren Ellie, Luke, Kelsey, Connor, Avery and Bradleigh.

A funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.  Burial will be private alongside her husband at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 577 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104 or Overlook Hospice, 88 Masonic Home Road, Charlton, MA 01507 or overlook-mass.org. Knowing Anne is now with Jim and can see all the wonders of Heaven. They will still be with the family too. The form may change, but they will remain in the hearts and thoughts of their loved ones. To their memory and condolences to the family, Sandra
