Obituary

Stanley J. Bernatowicz, 82, of Tower Road, Ludlow, MA. died Monday October 4, in Westerly Nursing Home, Rhode Island, after a long illness.
Born in Gardner, MA November 13, 1927, he was the son of the late Joseph and Valeria (Ambrowicz) Bernatowicz. A Navy veteran, of WW II, he attained the rank of Yeoman second class. He was a graduate of Gardner High School, and received his Bachelor’s degree from Fitchburg State College, and his Master’s from Tufts University,Boston. He moved to Ludlow in 1956, and was communicant of Christ the King Church. Stanley became a teacher and guidance counselor with a life-long interest in high school and collegiate sports, particularly baseball and soccer, and for many years coached at East Longmeadow High School and officiated soccer throughout New England.

He was a member of and former president of the New England Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association.
He was the husband of Alice (Barr) Bernatowicz, who passed away September 23, 2009. After retirement, they spent many winters in Zephyr Hills, Florida. Stanley is survived by his former wife, Phyllis (Hill) Knecht, and their children, Mark of Herndon VA, Gary of Chicopee, MA, Michael of Westerly, RI, and Jeffrey of Yakima, WA. He also leaves his three
much-loved grandsons, LCpl Nicholas M. Bernatowicz of Camp Lejeune, NC, James W. Bernatowicz of Herndon, VA, and John R Costa of Westerly, RI. He leaves a brother Tony Bernatowicz of Bethel, CT a sister Frances Coutts of San Diego, CA and many extended family members and friends.

Service Information

A celebration of Stanley’s life will be held Friday, October 22, 2010, with
family and friends gathering at Christ the King Church, 41 Warsaw Avenue,
Ludlow, Ma. for an 11 AM Liturgy of Christian Burial. Committal Rites with
Military Honors will follow in Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in
Agawam, MA.

I was captain of the EL Spartans baseball team 1967. Coach was a wonderful man,teacher and an inspiration to me. He will be missed and will always have a special place in my heart! God Bless,Mark Grabowski

I thoroughly enjoyed being captain of the EL Baseball Team coached by your Dad. He was an inspiration to all of our team members. He invited us all over to your Mom & Dad's house after the season was over for a little cook out! He will be missed by many!! God Bless, Mark Grabowski
