Obituary

LONGMEADOW – Julius I “Chick” Hirst 82 of Ottawa, Canada formerly of Longmeadow, MA died peacefully Friday May 27, 2005. Born in Leeds England March 8, 1923 he was the son of the late Barney & Gertrude Hirst. As a young man he emigrated to Canada following his service as a pilot in the RAF during World War II. He was an aeronautical engineer with a distinguished career. He was a member of Beth Ezekiel Synagogue of Owen Sound Canada, where a Memorial Garden has been established in his honor. Active in many organizations he was a 32 degree Mason with Scottish Rites, a member of the Shrine, he was a member and past president of the Optimist Club, Chick also participated in many other community activities. Married to Sonia “Sunny” (Cooper) Hirst for 47 years she died in 1996. Following her death, Julius lived in Longmeadow, MA with his daughter Karen Skomars and her family, while in Longmeadow he continued his community involvement and also attended a “Senior Net” Class at the Jewish Community Center. He is survived by his second wife of 7 years, Daphne (Thompson) Hirst, 2 daughters Karen G. Skomars and her husband Lt. Col Chris F. Skomars USAFR of Philadelphia, PA formerly of Longmeadow, MA Beverly E. Rose and her husband Paul of Ottawa, Canada. Grandfather of Mark Jaffe of Salt Lake City, UT Phillip and Jonathan Jaffe both of Longmeadow, MA and Kami Francis of Ottawa, Canada. Step father of Dianna Thompson and Peter Thompson of Canada. A brother Maurice Hirst of Canada. Chick also leaves many nieces nephews and friends. He was predeceased by 5 brothers and a sister.
