Irene M. (Borgatti) Smith, 97, formerly of Ludlow, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2026. Born in Springfield on July 13, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Gelindo and Mary (Respighi) Borgatti. Educated in local schools, Irene worked for many years as a bookkeeper for the former Reopell Chevrolet. She was an active volunteer for the American Red Cross and the former Ludlow Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.
Irene is survived by her daughters Donna Fitzgerald (Jeff) and Darlene Anderson, as well as her son-in-law John Dusza. She also leaves her 8 beloved grandchildren Bryan Dusza (Janna), Matthew Dusza (Crystal), Bethaney Dusza (James), Adam Dusza (Jill), Rachel Anderson (Josh), Brady Anderson, Kyle Fitzgerald (Sara) and Caitlin Fitzgerald as well as 9 great-grandchildren. Sadly, she was predeceased by her husband Donald Smith, her son Michael Smith, her daughter Deborah Dusza and her brother Walter Borgatti.
Visiting hours for Irene will be Saturday, January 24, 2026 from 10:00-11:00 AM at the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home, 64 Sewall St., Ludlow, MA. A funeral home service will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will be private. Donations in Irene’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
