Howard F. Slate, Jr. 87 of Ludlow a member of the Greatest Generation, died Monday, August 13, 2012, in the care and comfort of his home. Born in Springfield, MA August 4, 1925 son of the late Florence (Kusiak) and Howard F. Slate, Sr. Educated in local schools he proudly served his country during World War II as a Specialist Second Class with the Army of the United States. Howard worked as a welder with many years of service for Monsanto Chemical Co. now known as Solutia. He was a member of the Monsanto 25 year club, the Chicopee Moose Lodge. He was also a member of Faith United Methodist Church. Husband of the late Caroline R. (Tucker) Slate who died in 1997. He is survived by his loving children, Susan Sulewski of Easthampton, MA Richard Slate and his wife Betty of Athol, MA Marion Wrona and her husband Mickey and Linda Dias and her husband Lee all of Ludlow, MA Brother of Hazel Morelli of Port St. Luice, FL Cherished grandfather of Sonya, Phillip, Rhonda, Laura, Chad and Meagan. Great-grandfather of Derek, Terra and Gavin. Also survived by many extended family members and friends. Sadly he was predeceased by siblings Ruby Connors, Ruth Slate, Shirley Keller, Earl Slate and Robert Slate.

Funeral services celebrating his life will be Friday, August 17, 2012, at 12 Noon at the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home 64 Sewall St. Ludlow, MA Rites of Committal with military honors will follow in Island Pond Cemetery.
