Obituary

Frederick J. Freddie Consolmagno 89 of Ludlow, a member of the greatest generation, and a decorated World War II Veteran died Tuesday January 25 in Baystate Medical Center. Born in Springfield, MA October 31, 1921 son of the late Joseph and Mary (Macchiaroli) Consolmagno. Educated in local schools, Freddie proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the Army of the United States attaining the rank of Sergeant. He served in Company M 254th Infantry Regiment. In March of 1945 while in Germany, heroic actions of volunteering to fire a bazooka, into an enemy pillbox. After firing 4 rounds with accuracy, leading to the success and safety of his battalion. For his gallant action he was awarded the bronze star. He later worked for the Springfield Newspapers, as a compositor. He married Audrey J. Darby on July 9, 1949 in the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield. Together they shared over 61 years of marriage. He was a member of the Springfield American Legion Post, and was often in attendance at 63rd Infantry reunions. He was a Communicant of Sacred Heart Church. An avid golfer, he belonged to Ludlow Country Club for well over 40 years. he is survived by his wife Audrey J. (Darby) Consolmagno. His children, Barbara A. Consolmagno of Springfield,MA Laura A. Michaelian and her husband Richard of East Longmeadow,MA Mark J. Consolmagno and his wife Lynn of Naples, FL and Michael A. Consolmagno and his wife Lisa of Chicopee, MA. Cherished grandfather of Adam, Chelsea, Brianna, Paul, Kristen, Glen, and Sarah. Also survived by extended family members and friends.

Funeral Services Celebrating his life will be Monday January 31, 2011 at 7:45AM from the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home 64 Sewall St. Ludlow with a funeral procession leaving for Sacred heart Church 395 Chestnut St. Springfield at 8:30 AM The 9AM Mass will be offered by Msgr. George Farland. Rites of Committal with Military Honors will follow in the Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery of Agawam.
