Obituary

Eugene R. Yelle 87 died Thursday morning in the comfort of his home and the care of his loved ones. Born in the Indian Orchard Section of Springfield August 31, 1922 he was educated in local schools. A member of the Greatest Generation he proudly served his country during World War II. He was a PFC with the 4th Engineering Amphibious Brigade he saw service in the Pacific, Philippines, New Zealand, Japan and the Solomon Islands. He also obtained several decorations and citations for his service including the Victory Medal, American Theatre Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead. A Member of the First Church in Ludlow, he was a members of it’s men’s club, and member of the Saturday Night Club. Gene was a Sgt. with the Auxiliary Police Unit of the Springfield Police Department with over 20 years of service. He also worked for many years as the Supervisor of Maintenance for the Ludlow Housing Authority, and the Town of Ludlow Safety Committee. He was also a member of FEMA. He is survived by his wife of 40 years Celeste Sally (Silva) Sanford Yelle. His children Allen Yelle and his wife Christine, Brian Yelle and Craig Yelle. George Sanford and his friend Carol, Susan Lind and her husband Michael, Donald Sanford and his wife Kathy, and Sherry Colson and her husband Michael. Father in Law of Dorothy Sanford. Brother of Jackie Trusheim and her husband Will and Camille Rogers. Grandfather of 17, Great-Grandfather of 5, also survived by cousins, extended family members, and friends. Sadly he was predeceased by a son David Sanford, and brothers Roger and Lee Morrissette.

Service Information

Funeral Services Celebrating his life will be Monday March 29 at 11 AM in the First Church in Ludlow 859 Center St. Rt 21 Ludlow. Rev. Frank Grogett will Officiate. Rites of Committal with Military Honors will follow in Island Pond Cemetery.
