Obituary

Elizabeth Jane Lovett passed away peacefully at home, on January 15th, surrounded by her family, 21 days before her 100th Birthday. BJ was born in Springfield, on February 9, 1922, the daughter of Anna (Williston) and Paul L. Wood. She graduated from Ludlow High School, and worked briefly at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company in Springfield before enlisting in the US Navy during WWII. She was one of the first group of women to serve as a Wave, completing her basic training in Boston, and serving as a storekeeper 1st Class while stationed in Key West, Florida. In 2019, she travelled with Honor Flight Maine to Washington DC, a highlight of her Naval career.

On October 19, 1946, she married Robert E. Lovett, built a home in Ludlow, and went on to raise 6 children. She worked at the Horseman’s Yankee Peddler Newspaper, and then served as the administrative assistant at the First Congregational Church in Ludlow Massachusetts. After retirement, she built a home in Searsport, Maine, near her sister and brother, overlooking Penobscot Bay. She had a special love of music, and encouraged the same in her children, and often used her love of needlepoint to recognize a special family occasion. She loved traveling, was an avid reader, and spent much of her time hosting family during their regular visits.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Bob, her son, Mark, her brother, Brud, and sister-in-law, Betty.

She is survived by her sister, Fritzie Walker, and sister-in-law Karlin Wood of Seminole Florida, her children David (Jackie), of Utah, Jayne of MA, Sally (Patrick Lonergan) of Oregon, Robert (Ellen) of MA, and Nancy (Lester) Burlingame of MA, her grandchildren Kate (Christian) Scampoli and Christopher Lovett (Amber) of MA, Nash and Sarah Lovett (Steven Vargo), of Utah, that she held dear. She was also “GG” to great grandchildren Morgan and Brooke Scampoli, and is beloved by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on February 5th, at the First Congregational Church in Ludlow, Mass with burial following in Island Pond Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held this summer at the Searsport home.
