Obituary

Edward F. Burgess, 95, died on January 30 in Charleston SC.  He was born in Brookline MA on February 25, 1926, the second child of Clifford J. and Teresa (O’Leary) Burgess.  His father and mother, his sisters Joan Monagle (Bernard), Marcia Mulligan (Hugh), and Myra Burgess, and his brothers Clifford Burgess (WWII), Donald Burgess (Irene), and Richard Burgess (Marjorie), all predeceased him.

He met and married a Ludlow girl, Antoinette Lavoie, 68 years ago.  Sadly, she predeceased him in 2018.  Ludlow was their choice to settle and raise their family.  Ed was the father of four, Teresa Monnier (John) of Summerville SC, Nancy Stroud (Kirk) of Charleston SC, Edward Burgess of Ludlow, and Claire Burgess of Winter Haven FL.  Then came nine grandchildren, John Monnier, Lawton (Rachael) and Edward Stroud, Jeanne Harris (Drew), Christopher, Laura and Elizabeth Burgess, Julia Wang (Jonathan) and Andrew Burgess.  He had five great grandchildren, Benjamin, Bradley, Jonah, Ellie, and Nancy Jeanne.

Life for Ed was family.  Summers were beaches and orange popsicles; winters were helping with homework and Sunday rides.

In Ludlow, Ed served on the Finance Board, School Committee, Playground Commission and as a Trustee of the Hubbard Memorial Library and Ludlow Hospital.

He retired from the Bureau of Pupil Services in the Springfield schools in 1983.

Ed served in Europe in WWII with Company A, 11th Infantry, 5th Division.  His decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge (he was most proud of that one), and the Purple Heart.  His Bronze Star Medal Citation lauds his “Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations against the Enemy, Ardennes Campaign.”

Dear Uncle Ed, You were a sweet and gentle man who was generous with his time and energy and love. I still have fond memories of me hitch hiking from UMASS over to Ludlow to visit with both you and Tony plus Nana and Grampa, at the same time getting a wonderful meal from Tony. You would always drive me back to Amherst saving me sticking out my thumb. You also always amazed me with your prowess on the many projects you always had going. Coming from a man who can only use a hammer and a putty knife, you were quite the fix-it artist. I always just call "the guy". Lastly, I will always remember the deep love you had for Aunt Tony. She was your one true love, your sweetheart. Tell her I said hi. Rest easy.
