Stella A. ‘Mona’ May 91 formerly of 460 West St. died Saturday January 8. Born September 6, 1919 in the Gilbertville Village of Hardwick, MA she was daughter of the late Andrew & Mary (Barszcz) Maj. She had lived in Gilbertville until 1998 when she moved to Ludlow. Stella was a 1933 graduate of Gilbertville Grammar School and a 1937 Graduate of Hardwick High School. While there, she had been the Captain of the basketball team, and enjoyed competing with school teams from other towns. Stella was employed for many years by the Ware Shoe Company. She was responsible for putting together the first samples for Ladies shoes. During her entire life Stella loved nature and the great outdoors, truly an outdoor girl. She enjoyed plants, and flowers and gardening. She was fond of birds, fed them faithfully, and they sought her out on a regular schedule. Stella supported he local community and was a generous benefactor to the Gilbertville Library, The Hubbard Memorial Library in Ludlow, The Randall Boy’s & Girl’s Club Ludlow Community Center, and the Ministry with the Deaf for the Diocese of Springfield. Truly she has made a difference in the lives of countless people. Stella is survived by her sister and friend Selma K. ‘Sally’ May with whom she lived at Keystone Commons and recently at Mont Marie Health Care Center in Holyoke. Both of them liked to recall their early years when they shared fun bus trips from Ware to Worcester to enjoy a day of shopping and lunch at Denholm & McKay’s and an occasional movie. Stella is also survived my several cousins and friends who will miss her. She was predeceased by her siblings Zygmunt W. ‘James’ May, Edwin May, and Emily R. ‘Sue’ Zakszewski.
