Obituary

Sister Rita Cardin, 85, a Sister of St. Anne, known in religion as Sister Mary Rita of the Crucifix, died March 17 at Marie Esther Health Center in Marl-borough. She was in the 65th year of religious life. Born in Central Falls, RI, August 9, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Corona (Larosée) Cardin. Both her elementary and high school education were completed at Notre Dame School in that city. She held a Bachelor of Music degree from Anna Maria College, Paxton, MA. She pronounced her religious vows in 1939 in Lachine, Quebec. Sister taught for six years in Montreal and continued her ministry in schools staffed by the Congregation in Cohoes, NY; Marlborough, Ludlow, Worcester, and North Adams, MA. Sister Rita was a long time member of the Pastoral staff at St. John the Baptist Parish in Ludlow coming to town in 1953. She was a music teacher at St. John the Baptist School, and served as church organist. From 1982-1990 She was the housekeeper for Fr. Homer Gosselin at Notre Dame Church in North Adams, and organist at Holy Family Parrish in Greylock. Sister Cardin is survived by her sister, Lucille of North Providence, RI; by her two brothers, Leo and wife Jeanne of North Providence and Raymond and wife Evelyn of Lymansville, RI.; by her sister-in-law Terry Cardin and brother-in-law Edward Whiteside, both of North Providence, RI, as well as by many nephews and nieces. The parish family of St. John the Baptist in Ludlow will welcome Sr. Rita home again with a wake Palm Sunday March 20 from 7-9 pm in the church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday March 21, in St. John the Baptist Church 181 Hubbard St. Ludlow, MA at 9 am. Services will continue with a wake Monday 2-4 pm at St. Anne Convent in Marlborough, with a prayer service at 4 pm. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at the convent chapel. Burial in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Marlborough. Local Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home, 64 Sewall St. Ludlow, MA. Donations in Sr. Rita’s memory may be made to St. John the Baptist Pastoral Center, 181 Hubbard St. Ludlow, MA 01056, or to the Sisters of St. Anne Retirement Fund.
