I was just thinking about Big Birm Saturday night. Ottawa played Buffalo and Derek Amell was working the lines. Derek came to supervise an NAHL game that Ryan and I worked. Birm was so pumped an NHLer was coming to watch the game. He was just great guy all around and his exuberance that night was off the charts. Ryan always came to the rink with a smile on his face (yes, even for Jr. B) While I never had a chance to skate with him in the ECHL, I feel fortunate to have had an opportunity to know him.

While I only had the pleasure of meeting Ryan once, he was well known within officiating circles as a very talented and hard working person. At some point, he crossed paths with my father Bruce Sr. I remember my dad telling me that Ryan had the character, work ethic, and talent to become a very good official. After reading his list of achievements, it is apparent that Ryan became a very good official, leader, and mentor to those around him. Hockey is a very small circle and with officials it is even smaller. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Birmingham family and those affected by this tragic loss.

He was a very impressive young man, as well as a terrific ambassador for the game of hockey, and he will be missed by me as well as many, many others. As well as our talks, I will always remember how proud he was that he was going to work for the ECHL, and encouraged him to just be himself because I knew he would do a great job. We all have watched Ryan grow up, and his smile and kindness, brought so much to everyone that he met throughout his short time here. Dan remembers fondly all the great times that they shared on and off the ice together, and will never forget what a fine human being that Ryan always was. We are all going to miss him, but will hold close to our hearts all of the wonderful times that we got to spend with him. We all hold you all close in our hearts, our prayers and thoughts will always be with you all. God Bless you Ryan, and Skate with the Angels.

Ryan, Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal. I will always remember the great times with you and your family growing up in the ice rinks. You and Bob learned how to play hockey together. I watched you grow into a great man. We loved you as a ref too, we knew we would get a fairly reffed game. You were the best. Now you have gone on to bigger and better things in that big rink in the sky. God Bless

I first got to know Ryan when we played together for RFB. We were then reunited at U of M - Dearborn for a season. We have many memories of nights at the rink and the many road trips. Like all of you, I am in a state of shock that number 7 was so tragically taken from us. He was a true hockey player, through and through.

Dear Birmingham Family, Our family is so sorry to read of Ryan's passing. This is tragic, and our hearts ache for each of you. It has been years since we have seen Ryan, but, I can see that he was busy turning into a fine young man, and for that you can be very proud! At times like this, we have to believe that there is a predetermined moment in time that each of us must return to our Lord, and those left behind must be thankful to God for the time (all to short as it was) Ryan was allowed to be a part of our lives. We are blessed to have known Ryan. You will be in our prayers for many days to come. Sincerest Sympathy, Ron & Marsha Podsiad (Lance, Chase & Jordan) Wyandotte, MI

I was at the dentist when my hygienist told me that her cousin's son was killed in a horrible car accident and his name was Ryan Birmingham. Just the way she told me and the things she said about him showed me what a truly gifted, special man Ryan was. I was horribly sad when she told me, even though I never met him, and I am equally sad to read his obit. No parent should ever lose a child. I am deeply sorry for the entire Birmingham family and Ryan's huge circle of friends.

My deepest sympathy to the Birmingham family. I am a goalie in the ECHL and often joked around with the Ryan during games. I only knew him through hockey but I was use to seeing him around the rink. He is a great person and I am truly sorry for your loss.

Big Birm, You will forever and always be missed. There was certainly a time in both of our lives where were what you could call two peas in a pod! I'm gonna miss that 'live for the moment' attitude that you always approached life with. Love forever. Ryan
