Helen A. (Rachmaciej) Halgas, 94, a lifelong resident of Ludlow passed away peacefully Friday, July 22, 2016. Born November 9, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Sophie (Paluch) Rachmaciej. Helen worked for many years in the Food Service department of the Ludlow Public Schools as well as Millers Dairy Bar and Zayers Department Store.
Helen was an active and devout communicant of Christ the King Church in Ludlow. She was a member of the parishs St. Anne Sodality. Helen was a mainstay of the parishs pierogi making group. An avid Bingo player, Helen was also a member of the Ludlow Mothers Club and active at the Ludlow Senior Center.
Helen is survived by her loving daughter Carol Romaniak and her husband William; her son-in-law John Smolinski and her brother Theodore (Teddy) Rachmaciej all of Ludlow. She also leaves her five beloved grandchildren Paul Romaniak and his wife Heidi, Carissa Gross and her husband Julian; Shauna Dion and her husband John; Derek Smolinski and his wife Melissa and Megan Rosa and her husband Lucas Rosa Jr and her great grandchildren Brianna, Alexis, John, Owen and Olivia. Sadly she was predeceased by her husband Chester Halgas Sr. in 1983; her son Chester Halgas Jr. in 1974 and her daughter Sylvia Smolinski in March, 2016. She was also predeceased by seven brothers and sisters.
A terrible loss in a year of losses. Helen was a generous and caring soul that will certainly be missed. I feel incredibly blessed to still have both of my parents in my life and deeply saddened for my extended family that has dealt with the tragedy of losing theirs. My heart goes out to all of you. Dad, I know you will surely miss your sister. Sending love to all of you during this difficult time.
Our deepest sympathy on the loss of your Mother and Grandmother. She was a great lady. We hope that she is resting in the hands of Our Dear Lord and is smiling down on all of us! May she rest in Peace. Maybe she is pinching pierogi up there in heaven for all her Polish friends.
Family and friends are invited to gather for Helens funeral service Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home, 64 Sewall St, Ludlow, MA followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in Christ the King Church, Warsaw Avenue, Ludlow, MA. Rites of Committal will follow in St. Aloysius Cemetery, Berkshire Avenue, Springfield, MA.
