Obituary

Antoinette M. “Toni” (Lavoie) Burgess, 96, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 3, 2018. She was born in Ludlow on April 25, 1921, the first of seven children of the late Hector and Laura (Charpentier) Lavoie. After marriage, it was easy to settle in Ludlow where family, friends and children adjusted easily to a lifetime pattern. Antoinette became a teacher of English, French and Latin in the Ludlow schools before moving on to a professorship in English at STCC, retiring as Director of the school’s General Studies Program. A communicant of Christ the King Church in Ludlow, she was a longtime member of the Sodality of the Ladies of Anne at St. John the Baptist Church.

Antoinette is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years Edward F. Burgess of Ludlow; four children Teresa (John) Monnier of Strafford, PA; Nancy (Kirk) Stroud of Charleston, SC; Edward (June) Burgess and Claire Burgess, both of Ludlow. She also leaves her 9 grandchildren John Monnier, Lawton (Rachael) and Edward Stroud and Jeanne (Drew) Harris; Christopher, Laura, Julia and Elizabeth Burgess; and Andrew Burgess; 4 great-grandchildren. Antoinette also leaves her sister Rev. Sr. Theresa Lavoie SSA. Sadly she was predeceased by her brothers Louis and Bernard Lavoie and her sisters Pauline Mei, Lucille Regnier and Rev. Sr. Dolores Lavoie.

Visiting hours will be Monday, January 8, 2018 from 9:00-10:30 AM at the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home, 64 Sewall St., Ludlow, MA.


Service Information

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, January 8, 2018 at 11:00 AM in Christ the King Church, Warsaw Ave., Ludlow, MA. Burial will follow in Island Pond Cemetery, Center St., Ludlow, MA


Donation Information

Donations in Antoinette’s memory may be made to Saint John the Baptist School, 217 Hubbard Street, Ludlow, MA 01056 or to the care of the infirmed Sisters of Saint Anne, 720 Boston Post Road East, Marlborough, MA 01752

Nancy, I am so sorry for the death of your mamma. Reading her obituary...it stuck out in my mind that she turned 70 the day you delivered my son. She must have been a loving woman to have raised such a compassionate lady as you. Your entire family will be in my prayers.

So sorry to learn of the passing of one of LHS's most memorable teachers. I studied Latin with Mrs.Burgess from 1963-1965. Her love of language was ever obvious. Once in college, I realized what she had given me in knowledge of the English language. She was a firm but understanding teacher. When I saw her, decades later,at church I thanked her for being such a role model and a wonderful educator. Her modest reply just revealed what a true lady she was. I will miss her.
