A family history of service.

Stanley Kapinos immigrated to the United States from Poland in 1912, and after a brief stay on Ellis Island, he settled in Three Rivers, Massachusetts. During his life, Stanley took trumpet lessons, mastered the instrument, and became a professional musician and dance bandleader. Speaking only Polish, Stanley committed himself to learning the English language, and was tutored by young Mary Motyka, whom he fell in love with and married.

Seeing a need in the community, Stanley and Mary founded the Kapinos Funeral Service in a Ludlow storefront in 1930, and two years later purchased a separate building on Sewall Street. This setting of the Kapinos Funeral Home was an innovation in the community, since wakes and funeral services had always been held in family homes and churches. The homelike setting and welcoming atmosphere were a great comfort to families, and the business gradually expanded to serve more of the community.
Their daughter, Emily, was one of the first women in Massachusetts’s funeral service, receiving her license in 1951. Shortly afterward, Ben Mazur came to the firm as an intern and, upon meeting him, Emily knew at once that he was the man she was destined to marry. Together, they operated the firm until 1991.
Emily and Ben’s youngest son, Edward P. Mazur, became a third generation funeral director and joined the firm in 1982. In 1985, the firm’s name was updated to Kapinos-Mazur to reflect the heritage of ownership. Today, Ed carries on the tradition of compassionate service that his grandparents established over 75 years ago.
